Principal Engineer (Power Systems)

Location: Calgary, Canada; requires approximately 10–20% travel and field data collection as needed.

Salary: USD 140,000–160,000 per year, plus potential participation in an annual discretionary bonus program.

What you will do

• Perform transmission planning and power system studies covering load flow, short-circuit, thermal and voltage analysis, dynamic stability, transient, harmonic, motor starting, and equipment evaluation studies.
• Develop and maintain power system models, databases, and base cases for load flow and dynamic stability analysis.
• Use PSS/E or PSLF and support studies with tools such as PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, ASPEN, MUST, and TARA.
• Analyze results, develop solutions to identified problems, and prepare reports describing methodologies, data requirements, recommendations, and observations.
• Support generator interconnection, NERC TPL and MOD compliance, ISO/RTO system addition compliance, and renewable energy projects involving wind, solar, and energy storage.
• Lead, educate, and mentor engineers while managing multiple projects, client relationships, documentation, and deliverable schedules.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent electrical engineering experience.
• 15+ years of experience in power system operations or planning, with emphasis on analysis and studies.
• Professional Engineer’s License required.
• Proficiency with PSS/E or PSLF required.
• Experience with ISOs/RTOs and knowledge of IEEE, NERC, and FERC standards, as well as major North American power regions.
• Strong written and oral communication, quantitative problem-solving, independent work, and project management skills.

Nice to have

• Proficiency with PSCAD, EMTP/ATP, ASPEN, MUST, or TARA.
• Experience with utility-scale wind, solar, energy storage, and battery storage operations.
