Environmental Laboratory Group Leader

Location: Richmond, Virginia, USA; work in the environmental laboratory

Salary: $55,000–$70,000 per year, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.

What you will do

• Lead and supervise an operating team within the environmental laboratory.
• Analyze client-provided sample matrices for elemental metals using ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and CVAA.
• Review and approve analytical data, data packages, sequences, bench books, and related documentation.
• Schedule projects, manage rush sample digestion and analysis, and optimize personnel, instrument, and logistics utilization.
• Maintain, repair, calibrate, and troubleshoot instruments; prepare calibration standards and manage laboratory supplies.
• Develop analytical methods, update SOPs, oversee an off-site laboratory requiring occasional 24/7 coverage, and enforce quality and safety procedures.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or an equivalent field.
• Minimum 3–4 years of experience in a commercial production laboratory.
• Strong knowledge of the methods run within the department and ability to manage non-routine samples and complex workflows.
• Experience with ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and mercury analysis instruments.
• Ability to organize priorities, communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, develop staff, and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
• Ability to work safely with concentrated acids, lift up to 50 pounds several times a day, and occasionally work shifts of up to 12 hours.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of EPA Methods 200.7, 200.8, 6020B, and 6010D.
