Wind Turbine Engineer - Mechanical Systems (Renewable Energy) (Wind Turbine Mechanical Systems): Supporting Avangrid’s wind turbine and solar PV fleet by investigating mechanical equipment failures and evaluating reliability improvements with an accent on drivetrain, structural, foundation, and bearing systems. Focus on root-cause analysis, FEA and CAD-based engineering studies, OEM coordination, and field investigations at generating plants and suppliers.

Location: In office in Portland, Oregon, United States. Requires field work, visits to generating plants and suppliers, climbing 100-meter steel towers, and up to 20% travel.

Base salary: $87,500–$109,500 annually, depending on experience.

What you will do

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for wind turbine and solar PV mechanical systems, including drivetrains, structures, foundations, and bearings.
  • Investigate mechanical equipment anomalies and failures through inspections, analysis, root-cause evaluation, and corrective-measure assessment.
  • Coordinate technical investigations with external professionals, consultants, original equipment manufacturers, and service providers.
  • Propose and manage engineering studies to improve the reliability and performance of key wind turbine components.
  • Evaluate OEM design modifications and corrective measures, preparing technical summaries and presentations for decision-making.
  • Support fleet operations, field deployments, and safe resolution of technical issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent technical field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in renewable energy.
  • Familiarity with FEA, aeroelastic and CAD modeling programs, including AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Ansys, Flex, or Bladed.
  • Working knowledge of office and engineering analysis programs, testing equipment, and measurement equipment.
  • Strong technical writing, problem-solving, multitasking, and practical decision-making skills.
  • Ability to climb 100-meter steel towers, occasionally lift up to 50 pounds, work in the field, and travel up to 20%.
