Principal Engineer (Nondestructive Testing)

Location: San Diego, California; onsite five days a week

Salary: $120,600–$180,900 per year

What you will do

• Develop and implement NDE inspection processes for cast austenitic stainless-steel housings with suppliers.
• Define method selection, calibration, acceptance criteria, validation, and documentation requirements.
• Review and improve NDE processes for steel welds and critical cast, forged, and brazed compressor components.
• Update NDE inspection notes on new and legacy engineering drawings.
• Review supplier NDE results, assess nonconforming parts, identify process gaps, and drive corrective actions.
• Collaborate with suppliers and Supply Chain on manufacturing process improvements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil, Electrical, or Materials Engineering.
• At least eight years of direct nondestructive testing experience.
• Practical experience with contact and immersion ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, MPI, FPI, and LPI.
• Familiarity with UT beam-tool simulation for scan-plan design and validation.
• Working knowledge of ASTM and ASME NDE standards.
• Strong understanding of ultrasonic and radiographic testing, material defects, and failure mechanisms in steels, stainless steels, nickel alloys, and other materials.

Nice to have

• Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Deep knowledge of phased array ultrasonic testing.
• Experience with linear accelerators and computed tomography.
• Knowledge of steel and alloy manufacturing, welding, and brazing processes.
• Experience performing stress analysis with Ansys.
