TL;DR
Costs Negotiator (Insurance Litigation): Managing a caseload of costs arising from motor, casualty, legacy, marine, clinical negligence and professional negligence claims with an accent on detailed assessment, dispute preparation and settlement negotiation. Focus on conducting advocacy at hearings and mediations, advising clients, meeting service requirements, and developing a Paralegal.
Location: Birmingham, UK; hybrid. The role is advertised as 28–35 hours per week.

What you will do
- Manage an independent caseload from receipt of papers through resolution of costs.
- Review cases, establish costs strategies and settlement parameters, and assess the strengths and weaknesses of each position.
- Prepare points of dispute, consider replies, negotiate settlements and provide clients with progress updates.
- Handle correspondence and calls within SLAs, review files periodically, and meet client KPIs, MI requirements and quality standards.
- Instruct counsel and attend conferences, detailed assessment hearings, application hearings and mediations, both remotely and in person, including conducting own advocacy.
- Delegate tasks to a Paralegal and support their technical development and achievement of objectives.
Requirements
- At least 12 months of experience in a similar costs negotiator role, handling an own caseload.
- Degree, LPC and/or ALCD.
- Experience with client liaison, the Detailed Assessment process, preparing Points of Dispute and considering replies.
- Knowledge of current costs case law and insurance litigation practice and processes.
- Strong telephone negotiation, listening and verbal communication skills, with the ability to make decisions, prioritise workloads and remain calm under pressure.
- Proficient IT skills in Microsoft packages and ability to comply with SRA Standards & Regulations.
