Senior Counsel - Employee Benefits (Insurance)

Location: Work from Home, USA; hybrid work is available near Baltimore, Cedar Rapids, Denver, or Philadelphia with three days in the office, while candidates not near a core office may work remotely.

Salary: $165,000–$185,000 annually, plus potential eligibility for an annual bonus.

What you will do

• Provide legal advice on the development, filing, offering, and administration of supplemental health and life insurance products.
• Prepare, review, and negotiate marketing, distribution, administration, TPA, and vendor agreements.
• Research regulatory issues involving state claims processing, benefit coordination, eligibility, and ERISA preemption.
• Advise on legal risks, business decisions, escalated claims, and consumer complaints.
• Monitor changes in insurance laws, rules, and regulations and draft regulatory responses, disclosures, and correspondence.
• Collaborate with compliance teams to develop policies and procedures that mitigate legal risks.

Requirements

• JD from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Membership in good standing of the Bar in any US jurisdiction.
• At least five years of experience at a sophisticated law firm or as in-house counsel, with insurance regulatory legal experience and/or a focus on supplemental health or life insurance.
• Knowledge of relevant insurance laws, rules, and regulations, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Sound judgment, adaptability, organization, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and effective project management skills.

• Experience with individual and group life insurance products.
• Experience with voluntary benefits, supplemental health, long-term care, ACA, HIPAA, and ERISA laws.
