Lead Building Engineer (Building Maintenance)

Location: Alexandria, VA, United States. This is an on-site position; remote and hybrid options are not available. The role works the second shift and may include on-call, overtime, and emergency-response duties.

What you will do

• Review daily work orders, assign tasks, monitor recurring problems, and recommend corrective actions.
• Oversee engineering staff work and inspect completed repairs to ensure equipment and client spaces are fully functional.
• Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs for building machinery and systems.
• Inspect and repair HVAC, fire alarm, plumbing, electrical, boiler, pump, water, and refrigerant systems.
• Estimate labor and materials, maintain supplies and tools, and coordinate maintenance downtime with the Chief Engineer, Property Manager, and clients.
• Respond to emergencies, maintain repair records, and operate energy-management programs that reduce operating costs.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, trade-school training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least five years of building maintenance experience.
• Required trade licenses or permits, such as a journeyman or master electrician license, refrigeration certificate, boiler license, or steam operator license, as applicable.
• Thorough knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, and building automation systems; experience with boilers, heaters, pumps, compressors, refrigerant systems, and water systems.
• Knowledge of energy-management systems and strong organizational, analytical, communication, and customer-service skills.
• Ability to climb ladders and stairs, stand and stoop, safely operate lifting or rigging equipment, and lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
