Principal Engineer - Protection & Control

Location: Portland or Augusta, Maine, United States; office-based, 5 days per week

Salary: $128,000–$160,000 annually, plus up to a 16% bonus

What you will do

• Guide the design, estimating, analysis, settings, testing, and commissioning of transmission and substation protection systems.
• Develop and coordinate system protection platforms, including engineering criteria, construction standards, equipment specifications, networking, automation, and commissioning plans.
• Oversee engineering studies, evaluate protection system performance, and solve complex technical and operational problems.
• Analyze transmission fault events, prepare reports, and recommend corrective actions and lessons learned.
• Represent the company on regional and national committees and coordinate with affiliates, departments, contractors, consultants, and external agencies.
• Lead technical training and development for the Protection Engineering group and mentor department engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and at least 10 years of relevant experience; a master’s degree is preferred.
• Expert knowledge of power system protection, engineering design, national and international standards, and compliance requirements.
• Experience with transmission and substation planning, operations, construction, engineering analysis, documentation, and design review.
• Ability to review and approve engineering work for compliance with company standards, specifications, and contract requirements.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements.
• Professional engineering license preferred.
