TL;DR
Senior Electrical Engineer (Building Electrical Systems): Designing and supporting electrical systems for laboratory modernization and commercial and institutional building projects with an accent on power distribution, code compliance, and construction documentation. Focus on load and short-circuit calculations, equipment sizing, site modifications, project budget tracking, and mentoring junior electrical engineers.

Location: Upton, New York, United States; onsite work with construction site visits. This position is limited to U.S. citizens because unescorted access to controlled laboratory areas is required.

Salary: $113,050–$180,900 per year

What you will do

  • Design electrical equipment and power distribution systems, including switchgear, motor control centers, panelboards, motor starters, variable-frequency drives, and related equipment.
  • Prepare load, short-circuit, arc-flash, motor-starting, lighting, and other electrical calculations to validate system capacity, protection, and equipment sizing.
  • Develop design documents, specifications, risers, single-line and three-line drawings, equipment layouts, schedules, conduit routing, and construction bid documents.
  • Support construction through shop drawing reviews, RFI responses, site visits, field modifications, and contractor coordination.
  • Assist project managers with scope validation, budget and milestone tracking, contract reviews, and procedural documentation across multiple projects.
  • Review and mentor junior engineers’ designs and ensure compliance with codes, contract documents, and laboratory policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible electrical systems design experience with project management experience in commercial and institutional buildings.
  • Broad knowledge of building electrical systems, including grounding, lighting, lighting controls, and fire alarm systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC/NFPA 70), relevant NFPA codes, and applicable industry and client standards.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for unescorted access to controlled laboratory areas; a valid driver’s license is also required. Ability to climb ladders above four feet and wear required PPE, including a respirator if necessary.

Nice to have

  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional engineering license in New York State.
  • Proficiency in Revit and SKM, Lumen, or comparable electrical calculation software.
  • Knowledge of medium-voltage distribution and transmission.
  • Experience with low-voltage telecom, security, and audiovisual design documents.
