Senior Software Engineer - COBOL

Location: Hybrid position for Virginia residents in Richmond or Lynchburg, Virginia; in-office days are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Core working hours target 9am–5pm EST. This role is not eligible for sponsorship.

Salary: $96,700–$145,000 national range, plus eligibility for a performance-based bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Support the CLOAS long-term care policy administration system and its peripheral systems.
• Monitor system health and resolve failures, job abends, policy-related incidents, and defects.
• Analyze user incidents, assess business and technical impact, and propose solutions.
• Design, code, document, test, and implement changes through established change-control processes.
• Create system reports for data analysis, business activities, regulatory requirements, and SOX audits.
• Collaborate with developers, business analysts, QA members, business partners, and other IT teams while supporting Agile ceremonies and incident resolution.

Requirements

• Four-year college degree or equivalent relevant experience.
• Strong mainframe programming skills in COBOL, JCL, CICS, and IMS, with production support experience.
• Basic SQL and data analysis experience.
• Experience working on complex mainframe systems in cross-functional teams.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and prioritization skills.
• Must be a Virginia resident based in Richmond or Lynchburg and able to work in the office three days per week; visa sponsorship is unavailable.

Nice to have

• Mainframe migration, Assembler, IMS database, or advanced SQL experience.
• Knowledge of long-term care insurance products and premiums.
• Experience with Agile, managed services, SLAs, work queues, or onshore-offshore delivery models.
• Experience with modern mainframe development and testing tools, Product Accelerator, or automated COBOL conversion tools.
