Workers' Compensation Associate Managing Counsel

Location: Walnut Creek, California, United States; regular attendance at hearings, trials, depositions, and other court proceedings is required, with transportation to meetings and a valid driver's license required depending on location.

Annual base salary: $153,700–$253,700, plus eligibility for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What you will do

• Lead and manage the workers' compensation legal office and act as backup for Managing Counsel.
• Oversee advocacy and case handling quality for assigned matters and matters managed by Staff Counsel.
• Manage staffing, performance, professional development, compensation, engagement, and attorney coaching.
• Assign cases, review files, maintain caseload standards, and ensure timely completion of litigation plans, evaluations, reports, and legal research.
• Advise clients and business partners on legal matters and changes in the law while maintaining high ethical and professional standards.
• Contribute to Staff Counsel leadership initiatives, regional reviews, committees, management meetings, and national projects.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate or equivalent international legal degree from an accredited law school.
• At least 7 years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Active law license in good standing in each state where representation is required.
• Trial experience, including hearings, trials, dispositive motion arguments, depositions, or other court proceedings.
• Prior project leadership or formal/informal management experience, with strong change leadership, collaboration, writing, presentation, and business acumen.
• Ability to provide feedback, manage underperformance, meet deadlines, and use job-related technology effectively.
