Senior Associate, Workers’ Compensation Staff Counsel (Insurance)

Location: Tampa, FL; hybrid schedule with 3 days in the office and 2 days from home

What you will do

• Manage all phases of moderately complex Florida workers’ compensation defense matters, including strategy, discovery, depositions, hearings, appeals, and post-hearing follow-through.
• Analyze complex legal and factual issues, conduct research, and develop effective defense strategies.
• Prepare and present witnesses and evidence at hearings and mediations, including significant first-chair advocacy.
• Provide timely legal guidance and communicate with clients, claims professionals, the OJCC, witnesses, and opposing counsel.
• Partner with Claims on strategy, escalation points, settlement objectives, and service strategies.
• Manage workload efficiently, maintain ethical and regulatory compliance, and stay current through continuing legal education.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Active license and good standing with the Florida Bar.
• At least 7 years of experience defending workers’ compensation claims, including significant first-chair hearing experience.
• Deep understanding of Florida workers’ compensation law and defense strategy.
• Strong written and oral advocacy, negotiation, courtroom presentation, strategic thinking, analytical and critical-thinking skills, and ability to deal with ambiguity.
• Demonstrated ability to build positive partnerships and collaborate with cross-functional business teams.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact with all organizational levels.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, LexisNexis, AI, workflow creation, and case-management systems.
• Independence, ethical clarity, and ability to travel overnight and locally up to 20%.
