Sr. Mechanical Designer

Location: Upton, New York, United States; onsite work at hirify.global.

Salary: $105,000–$122,000 per year, with level and offer based on experience, education, and qualifications.

What you will do

• Develop specialized and complex mechanical component and equipment designs using 3D CAD software.
• Prepare detailed fabrication and manufacturing drawings to ANSI Y14.5 standards.
• Support design and safety reviews, fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning.
• Design equipment for accelerator systems, including magnets, RF and vacuum systems, support structures, remote drives, lifting fixtures, and cooling systems.
• Plan, coordinate, and independently execute project-based design assignments.
• Collaborate with scientists, engineers, installers, maintenance staff, and other technical personnel; coordinate drafting support when needed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent plus one of the specified combinations of technical education and relevant experience, including 10 years of relevant experience as an alternative.
• Related experience in a broad technical field with demonstrated technical leadership.
• Proficiency with PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and/or SolidWorks for mechanical design and fabrication.
• Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing and machine-shop processes, welding, hardware and component selection, installation, and dimensioning and tolerancing.
• Ability to perform mechanical design independently and communicate technical changes clearly with engineers and technical staff.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Uncleared Personal Identity Verification credential and become a qualified Radiation Worker.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or engineering technology.
• Experience reviewing other designers’ 3D models and fabrication drawings.
• Experience with custom scientific equipment, magnet design, vacuum chambers, high-current or high-voltage equipment, motion and positioning systems, water cooling, or cryogenic components.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Excellent interpersonal and time-management skills.
