Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Onsite at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC, United States. Some local travel is required. U.S. citizenship and an active DoD Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD TS/SCI clearance are required.

Salary: $112,000–$190,000 per year, depending on experience and location. Annual performance bonus and possible equity or incentive compensation are also available.

What you will do

• Design and develop mechanical and electromechanical systems, assemblies, and components.
• Translate system requirements into mechanical specifications, 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
• Build and evaluate prototypes and execute mechanical system test plans.
• Troubleshoot system-level issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
• Integrate new components into existing platforms and support fabrication, installation, maintenance, upgrades, and sustainment.
• Coordinate with manufacturing personnel, technicians, engineers, suppliers, customers, and multidisciplinary teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
• 5–10+ years of experience in mechanical design and product development, including full-lifecycle engineering.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD/CAM software and experience creating technical drawings, specifications, documentation, and design analyses.
• Hands-on experience with fabrication, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, hand tools, power tools, precision measurement equipment, and shop equipment.
• Strong knowledge of materials, machining, fasteners, tolerance stack-ups, additive manufacturing, CNC machining, injection molding, and design for manufacturability.
• U.S. citizenship, active DoD Secret clearance, ability to obtain DoD TS/SCI clearance, and ability to lift or move 50 pounds.
