TL;DR
Advanced Process Control Engineer (Refining) (MPC/APC): Leading the development, commissioning, and sustainment of multivariable predictive control and optimization applications across refinery units with an accent on dynamic modeling, economic justification, and long-term value realization. Focus on designing cross-unit optimization strategies, analyzing process data to resolve control performance gaps, and supporting commissioning, startups, shutdowns, and system migrations.

Location: Onsite in Carson, California, United States. Available schedules are 9/80, 5/40, or 4/1; occasional after-hours support, turnaround support, travel, and emergency response are required. Relocation may be available.

Salary: $122,900–$212,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Lead the development, commissioning, validation, and long-term sustainment of MPC/APC applications across multiple refining units.
  • Own the full APC lifecycle, including opportunity identification, economic benefit estimation, controller design, model development, audits, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with Operations, Planning, Economics, Control Systems, OT, and vendors to align control strategies with refinery objectives, constraints, safety requirements, and LP signals.
  • Analyze process data and dynamic models to identify performance gaps, root causes, optimization opportunities, and cross-unit control improvements.
  • Provide technical leadership during commissioning, startups, shutdowns, turnarounds, migrations, and APC platform upgrades.
  • Mentor APC and Process Control engineers and train Operations, Engineering, and Technical Services on APC functionality and economic intent.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • At least 10 years of engineering experience in refining, petrochemical, or related industries, including at least 4 years in advanced process control engineering.
  • Experience leading APC applications from concept through sustained operation, including economic justification and benefit tracking.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without future visa sponsorship.
  • Ability to wear refinery PPE, use a respirator, perform field work, climb stairs and ladders, pass a hair drug test and physical, and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours, nights, weekends, inclement-weather operations, and on-call emergency support.

Nice to have

  • 10 or more years of Process Control experience with responsibility for APC design, commissioning, and sustainment.
  • 15 or more years of experience in Controls, Economic & Planning, or Process Engineering.
  • Experience developing advanced multivariable process control models from inception through commissioning.
  • Experience with Honeywell Experion and TPS/TDC, including intermediate tags, communications troubleshooting, and APC tuning.
