TL;DR
Senior Materials & Processes Engineer (Aerospace): Advising on materials and process requirements for human spaceflight hardware in intravehicular and extravehicular environments with an accent on materials selection, corrosion prevention, electrical bonding, qualification, and contamination control. Focus on reviewing designs and engineering documentation, developing verification plans, resolving anomalies, and supporting manufacturing and vendor acceptance testing.

Location: NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas; full-time onsite

What you will do

  • Advise on materials and processes requirements for intravehicular and extravehicular human spaceflight environments.
  • Support materials selection, process qualification, corrosion prevention, electrical bonding, flammability, toxic off-gassing, adhesive bonding, and contamination control.
  • Review hardware designs, engineering drawings, specifications, analyses, hazard reviews, and requirements verification for spaceflight systems.
  • Develop verification and validation plans and incorporate materials requirements into program and project specifications.
  • Assess vendor processes and recommend qualification and acceptance testing to satisfy technical requirements.
  • Support manufacturing, inspection, anomaly resolution, re-flight assessments, flight acceptance testing, and technical presentations to program boards.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship and successful completion of a background check are required.
  • At least two years of related Materials and Processes engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, including Metallurgy, Materials Science, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Systems Engineering.
  • Knowledge of metallic and nonmetallic materials, specifications, properties, and testing for space applications.
  • Experience or knowledge in engineering drawing review, failure analysis, heat treatment, electrical bonding, corrosion prevention, and contamination control.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, prioritization, and multidisciplinary collaboration skills.

Nice to have

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Engineering.
  • Experience with NASA or aerospace materials selection, oxygen compatibility, flammability prevention, process qualification, development, testing, and evaluation.
  • Experience coordinating or directing a technical team.
  • Experience with human spaceflight systems engineering and integration practices.
