Claim Counsel, Bond & SI (Surety Insurance)

Location: Federal Way, Washington, United States

Annual base salary: $111,600–$184,200, plus eligibility for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What you will do

• Investigate, analyze, evaluate, and resolve Bond & Specialty Insurance claims with moderate supervision.
• Prepare management reports covering loss development, financial exposure, reserves, coverage issues, claim strategies, and recovery opportunities.
• Manage outside counsel, litigation plans, budgets, mediations, settlement conferences, trials, depositions, and claim conferences.
• Provide legal advice to underwriters and claim colleagues on bond obligations, project contracts, coverage, indemnity, collateral, and surety rights.
• Handle account workouts, bankruptcies, recovery actions, defaulted contracts, and negotiations involving bonded obligations and related agreements.
• Research legal and marketplace developments, support underwriting initiatives, and contribute to broker visits, seminars, white papers, and customer-focused articles.

Requirements

• Five or more years of relevant legal or claim-handling experience; at least two years of relevant legal experience is required.
• Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate degree.
• Must be licensed, registered, or authorized and in good standing to practice law in the jurisdiction where the role is performed.
• Ability to analyze claims, make sound decisions, negotiate within authority limits, and resolve conflicts professionally.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain coverage determinations clearly.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities, work with data and analytics, and build collaborative relationships with colleagues, customers, and business partners.
