Special Officer (Licensed Peace Officer)

Location: The Met Fifth Avenue, New York, NY; employees must live within commuting distance in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania

Pay rate: $24.25879 per hour with NYPD Peace Officer Appointment, or $22.24268 per hour without appointment.

What you will do

• Enforce museum security rules and visitor rules of conduct to prevent theft, fire, collection damage, and personal injury.
• Control and monitor access for visitors, staff, vendors, volunteers, and contractors during operating and non-operating hours.
• Conduct package, parcel, bag, and vehicle inspections and identify items that could damage or vandalize the collection.
• Guard and patrol museum entrances, the perimeter, garage areas, and off-site facilities.
• Monitor safety conditions, provide museum escorts, and report incidents and unresolved issues through the Security Operations Center, radio, and chain of command.
• Provide professional customer service and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

• Must live within the five boroughs of New York City.
• Must pass the qualifications for appointment or licensing as a Special Officer by the New York City Police Commissioner.
• Must successfully complete or have completed the 162-hour M.P.T.C. Basic Peace Officer course.
• Must meet Transportation Security Administration requirements for S.T.A. approval and be able to obtain a gun permit.
• Must demonstrate sound judgment, self-control, professional conduct, reliable attendance, and strong written and verbal communication.
• Must be able to stand for sustained periods and safely climb stairs, bend, jump, run, lift 25 pounds, and handle or move materials.

• FDNY F03 Certificate of Fitness.

Hiring process

• Selected candidates awaiting appointment by the New York City Police Commissioner are designated Special Officer Candidates and initially perform Security Officer or Senior Security Officer duties.
• Special Officer Candidates may shadow existing Special Officers and receive on-the-job training until appointment.
