Police Officer

Location: Commerce, Texas, United States; campus-based police work involving vehicle, foot, and bicycle patrols.

Annual salary: $60,000.

What you will do

• Patrol designated campus areas, enforce criminal and traffic laws, direct traffic, and enforce parking regulations.
• Respond to criminal-law calls and complaints while providing information and assistance to students, faculty, and staff.
• Secure crime scenes, conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and apprehend or transport offenders.
• Write detailed police activity reports and forward relevant documentation to investigative or administrative departments.
• Serve arrest and search warrants, testify in court, recognize safety hazards, and determine appropriate actions under applicable laws and policies.
• Maintain law-enforcement skills and certifications, qualify with firearms, and safely operate police vehicles, radios, cameras, and emergency equipment.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent, plus either 12 college credit hours from an accredited institution or one year of honorable active-duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces.
• Fluent American English, including proficient grammar and spelling, is required.
• Valid driver license with a good driving record.
• Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) license and compliance with TCOLE minimum licensing standards are required.
• Ability to obtain passing TCOLE L-2 medical and L-3 psychological and emotional health declarations.
• Ability to work beyond normal hours, including weekends and holidays, and function under adverse or stressful conditions; background, psychological, and potentially polygraph and drug testing are required.

Nice to have

• Three years of experience as a commissioned law-enforcement officer.
• Alternatively, 30 college credit hours or three years of honorable active-duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces.
