TL;DR
General Engineer (Energy): Providing operational analysis and protection-system support for transmission, distribution, and substation automatic operations with an accent on fault location, relay event analysis, and degraded-protection risk assessment. Focus on validating electrical system models, identifying root causes of protection failures, and coordinating corrective maintenance and emergency support during storms.

Location: Hybrid in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, United States. The position may require extended hours, including storm and other energy delivery emergency coverage.

Annual salary: $92,000–$126,500. Eligible positions may receive a 15% annual bonus.

What you will do

  • Provide operational analysis and support for transmission, distribution, and substation automatic operations and system faults.
  • Provide immediate fault location information for 69kV-and-above line operations, critical 34kV lines, and 34kV operations where load is down.
  • Review protective relay event records, relay targets, equipment operations, and SCADA Historian data to determine fault types and evaluate protection performance.
  • Analyze protection system failures, identify root causes, and provide guidance to operations, field testing, transmission and substation teams, and asset management.
  • Generate corrective maintenance work requests and support programs addressing systematic equipment abnormalities.
  • Perform CAPE/CYME fault studies, validate system models, support power quality and claims investigations, and use FALLS lightning data to assess event causes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or a Professional Engineer license issued by the state of practice.
  • 4–7 years of professional engineering experience, subject to applicable experience reductions for a master's degree or PE license.
  • Ability to analyze complex electrical and mechanical systems and apply engineering theory, designs, standards, codes, and problem-solving methods.
  • Knowledge of complex field test equipment and engineering analysis software.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, written, oral communication, presentation, report-generation, and technical-writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of analysis tools such as CYMDIST, PSS/E, Python, PLS-CAD, Pole Foreman, Power BI, or similar software.

Nice to have

  • Graduate degree or graduate-level work in Engineering, Business Administration, or Project Management.
  • Engineer-in-Training certification and/or Professional Engineer license.
  • Experience leading employees or contractors during commissioning of electrical systems and equipment.
