Counsel

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah, United States; regular attendance at court events, depositions, and other appointments is required, with travel as needed.

Annual base salary: $106,300–$175,400, plus eligibility for performance-based cash incentive awards.

What you will do

• Handle a caseload of predominantly low- to moderate-complexity insurance defense matters from inception through trial, hearing, and appeal.
• Develop litigation strategies, try cases to verdict, and negotiate resolutions.
• Conduct legal research and prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery, and other legal documents.
• Attend hearings, trials, depositions, court events, and other appointments independently.
• Provide case analysis and recommendations to insured clients and claim partners on file-handling strategies.
• Advise and train claim partners and clients while maintaining strong business relationships and using case-management technology and automation.

Requirements

• Juris Doctorate or equivalent international legal degree from an accredited law school.
• At least 2 years of experience as a practicing attorney; 3+ years of insurance defense litigation experience is preferred for the ideal candidate.
• Active license in good standing to practice law in the state(s) where representation is required.
• Experience independently handling cases through trial or hearing and appeal, including hearings, dispositive motion arguments, depositions, and other court proceedings.
• Strong legal research, persuasive legal writing, oral advocacy, communication, negotiation, decision-making, and technology skills.
• Ability to travel to court proceedings and other meetings; a valid driver’s license may be required depending on location.
