Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid, with an average of 1–2 days per week at the Columbia, Maryland office. U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance are required.

What you will do

• Design and develop complex Java-based software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Build foundational AI frameworks, including internal APIs, middleware, and routing layers.
• Develop Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and reusable skills for secure AI interaction with databases, microservices, and external APIs.
• Implement enterprise AI guardrails covering data privacy, sensitive-data scrubbing, prompt-injection defense, and output validation.
• Collaborate with engineers to deliver secure, high-quality software solutions.
• troubleshoot software and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Strong Java experience with modern frameworks and libraries such as Spring and Guava.
• Experience with enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, microservices, object-oriented programming, and the agile software lifecycle.
• Experience with Linux and configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, and Maven.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment at the Columbia, Maryland office 1–2 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience using AI coding agents such as Claude Code or Gemini and autonomous agents for implementation, refactoring, and testing.
• Experience with NiFi, Kafka, AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with distributed or NoSQL databases and search technologies such as Elasticsearch, Postgres, or Trino.
• Python, Flask, web UI development with Vue, scripting, or big-data platform experience.
• Experience with Jira, Confluence, GitHub Enterprise, and standard agile development tools.
