Software Engineer (Hybrid) (Java)

Location: Hybrid role requiring an average of 1–2 days per week at the Columbia, Maryland office; U.S. citizenship required.

Salary: $137,510–$195,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex Java software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Design enterprise APIs and build RESTful web services using microservices architecture.
• Integrate Claude Code or Gemini agentic workflows into software engineering and testing.
• Use autonomous agents for multi-file feature implementation, codebase refactoring, and unit and integration test generation.
• Guide AI agents across complex multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Mentor engineers and provide team guidance while contributing hands-on in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

• At least 9 years of software engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree, 7 years with a master’s degree, or 13 years with a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Strong experience with Java, modern Java frameworks and libraries such as Spring and Guava, REST, microservices, and object-oriented programming.
• Experience serving as a tech lead, mentor, or engineering manager.
• Experience with Linux, Git, Nexus, Maven, agile software development, and enterprise APIs.
• U.S. citizenship is required; a current U.S. government security clearance is desired but not required.
• Must have or obtain DoD 8140/8570 compliance certification, such as Security+, within 60 days of hire.

Nice to have

• Experience using Claude Code, Gemini, or other AI coding agents in daily engineering workflows.
• Experience with AWS or Azure.
• Experience with distributed and NoSQL databases, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Solr, data lakes, or data warehouses.
• Scripting experience and familiarity with Jira, Confluence, or GitHub Enterprise.
