Software Engineer (Java/AI)

Location: Hybrid, with an average of 1–2 days per week at the Columbia, Maryland office; U.S. citizenship required.

Salary: $111,662–$155,000 annually.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Build Java-based software using modern frameworks and libraries.
• Design enterprise APIs and RESTful web services within microservices architectures.
• Integrate AI coding agents into daily engineering workflows for multi-file feature development, refactoring, and automated test generation.
• Guide AI agents across multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Collaborate with engineers in a fast-paced small-business environment while troubleshooting issues and meeting multiple deadlines.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance are required.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience with enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, microservices, and object-oriented programming.
• Strong testing, troubleshooting, responsiveness, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience with Linux, Git, Nexus, Maven, configuration management, and the agile software lifecycle.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment and attend the Columbia, Maryland office 1–2 days per week.

Nice to have

• Experience using Claude Code, Gemini, or other autonomous coding agents in daily engineering workflows.
• Experience with AWS or Azure.
• Experience with distributed or NoSQL databases and full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr.
• Scripting experience and familiarity with data lakes or data warehouses.
• Experience with Jira, Confluence, GitHub Enterprise, or similar development tool suites.
