Senior Mechanical Engineer (Aerospace)

Location: Washington, DC — Naval Research Laboratory, United States

Salary: $135,000–$190,000 per year, depending on experience and location, plus potential performance bonus and equity or incentive compensation.

What you will do

• Design, analyze, and direct the integration of structural components and mechanical assemblies for advanced space and air platforms.
• Own mechanical subsystems from initial concept through environmental testing and ensure compliance with engineering and environmental requirements.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models and fabrication drawings using industry-standard drafting conventions.
• Perform preliminary structural and thermal finite element analysis.
• Collaborate with Integration and Test teams during component assembly.
• Author test plans, design specialized test fixtures, and lead vibration, shock, thermal-vacuum, and altitude testing campaigns.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent work experience.
• 8+ years of proven experience in aerospace mechanical design.
• Direct experience designing aerospace or spacecraft hardware, including knowledge of current aerospace design practices and hardware standards.
• Mastery of CAD tools, preferably Siemens NX, and proficiency with FEA tools such as ANSYS or Nastran.
• Expert knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
• Active DoD Secret clearance and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD TS/SCI clearance; ability to lift or move 50 pounds.
