TL;DR
Mechanical Engineer III (Mechanical Systems/Communication Hardware): Designing, prototyping, testing, integrating, and sustaining mechanical and electromechanical systems for communication equipment with an accent on full-lifecycle engineering, CAD development, fabrication, and hardware validation. Focus on solving mechanical failures, performing environmental and vibration testing, supporting deployed antenna systems, and implementing reliable manufacturing-ready designs.

Location: Onsite in Washington, DC at the Naval Research Laboratory. Some local travel is required. U.S. citizenship and an active DoD Secret clearance with the ability to obtain and maintain DoD TS/SCI clearance are required.

Salary: $112,000–$190,000 per year, depending on experience and location. Eligible for an annual performance bonus and possible equity or incentive compensation.

What you will do

  • Design and develop mechanical and electromechanical systems, assemblies, and components.
  • Create 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, manufacturing documentation, specifications, and design analyses.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes, develop test plans, and support environmental, vibration, thermal, and functional testing.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and system-level issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Integrate new components into existing platforms and support fabrication, assembly, installation, maintenance, and sustainment of communication and antenna systems.
  • Coordinate with engineers, technicians, manufacturing teams, suppliers, and customers to deliver hardware solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5–7 years of experience in mechanical design and product development, including full-lifecycle engineering.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD/CAM and experience producing technical drawings and design documentation.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication, assembly, testing, troubleshooting, hand tools, power tools, precision measurement equipment, and shop equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, machining, fasteners, tolerance stack-ups, additive manufacturing, CNC machining, injection molding, and other manufacturing methods.
  • U.S. citizenship, an active DoD Secret clearance, eligibility for DoD TS/SCI clearance, and the ability to lift or move 50 pounds.
