TL;DR
Distribution System Operations Real-Time Reliability Engineer (DER/DERMS): Evaluating and coordinating distributed energy resources across the distribution grid with an accent on reliability analysis, operational planning, and grid modernization. Focus on developing contingency analyses, operating criteria, and decision-support tools for DERMS, ADMS, FLISR, Volt/VAR optimization, and real-time grid operations.

Location: On-site in New Albany, Ohio, United States

Salary: $87,633–$151,132.50 per year, depending on compensation grade.

What you will do

  • Perform engineering studies and operational analyses of DER and DERA impacts on distribution system reliability, including voltage, thermal loading, protection coordination, and backfeed conditions.
  • Develop operational planning models, forecasts, contingency analyses, operating criteria, procedures, and decision-support tools.
  • Identify DER-related system constraints and recommend measures to reduce operational and reliability risks.
  • Provide engineering guidance to Distribution Dispatch Centers, the System Control Center, Planning, Engineering, and other stakeholders.
  • Support DERMS, ADMS, FLISR, Volt/VAR optimization, intentional islanding, and other advanced grid capabilities.
  • Analyze DER and DERA participation under FERC Order 2222 and evolving wholesale market models while maintaining technical documentation and industry knowledge.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or an accepted engineering technology or advanced-degree alternative.
  • Experience requirements vary by grade: 2+ years for Engineer SG7, 4+ years for Engineer Senior SG8, or 8+ years for Engineer Principal SG9.
  • Professional Engineer registration in a U.S. state or Puerto Rico is preferred or required by grade, subject to approved exceptions.
  • Ability to analyze critical system conditions, make timely decisions under pressure, communicate clearly, and work collaboratively.
  • Willingness to accept on-call responsibilities and callouts.
  • Ability to work on site in New Albany, Ohio.

Nice to have

  • Experience in distribution or transmission operations, preferably 2–4 years or more.
  • Expertise in DER, DERA, VPPs, DER communications and settings, real-time protection and control, or related cybersecurity.
  • Experience with distribution automation, overcurrent coordination, FLISR, Volt/VAR optimization, SCADA communications, circuit modeling, power flow algorithms, or project management.
  • Certifications related to NERC, EPRI, or RTO/ISO operations.
