Contract Surety Underwriter (Midlothian VA, Wash. DC)

Location: Hybrid work with an expectation of at least three days per week in the office. The position is associated with Midlothian, Virginia and Washington, D.C.; candidates are considered from the Mid-Atlantic region. The description also references Woburn, Massachusetts.

Salary: $156,000–$234,000 base annually, with additional total compensation components.

What you will do

• Underwrite contract surety bonds according to Surety Group guidelines, assessing risk acceptability and strategic fit.
• Process daily bid and final bond requests and review submissions for completeness and policy compliance.
• Approve bonds within the assigned authority level and oversee the fiscal status of accounts.
• Analyze annual accounting audits, internal financial statements, credit information, and maintain accurate documentation.
• Build agency relationships, visit bond accounts, identify new partnerships, and grow premium production.
• Provide quarterly marketing updates, support special projects, attend regional meetings, and represent the team in the market.

Requirements

• At least 3–5 years of contract surety underwriting experience, including assessing and approving bonds within an assigned authority framework.
• Strong quantitative, financial, and credit analysis skills, including interpretation of financial statements and accounting audits.
• Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or accounting, or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience managing agency relationships, securing new agents, and growing a book of business.
• Strong written and verbal communication, marketing, and business development skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; willingness and ability to travel up to 25%.
