TL;DR
Terminal Operator - Pier IX (Bulk Material Handling): Operating, inspecting, maintaining, and cleaning terminal equipment used to transfer bulk materials from railcars to vessels with an accent on safety, environmental compliance, and operational reliability. Focus on supporting vessel loading and railcar unloading, identifying equipment hazards, and working in demanding industrial and marine conditions.

Location: Onsite in Newport News, Virginia, United States; day and night shifts, overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency response work may be required.

Salary: USD $27.45–$28.55 per hour

What you will do

  • Operate terminal equipment for the safe transfer and handling of bulk materials from railcars to vessels.
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment and material-handling systems.
  • Assist with vessel loading, railcar unloading, and other terminal operations.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and workplace hazards.
  • Complete operational, safety, and inspection documentation accurately.
  • Maintain terminal housekeeping standards and collaborate with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and vessel personnel.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least one year of work experience required.
  • History of safe work practices, reliability, and quality performance required.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude, troubleshooting, communication, organizational, and computer skills, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) under U.S. Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security regulations.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather, at elevated heights, and around dust, noise, vibration, and moving mechanical equipment; OSHA medical requirements for respirator use apply.

Nice to have

  • Experience in an industrial, marine terminal, manufacturing, construction, or material-handling environment.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, bulldozers, or forklifts.
  • Valid driver's license.
