Substation Structural Engineer (High-Voltage Substations)

Location: United States — Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Raleigh, Roanoke, Asheville, Fort Mill, or the surrounding listed locations; local candidates preferred.

Salary: $77,539–$110,770 annually in Roanoke, Virginia. Compensation varies by skills, experience, education, and geographic location.

What you will do

• Lead, review, and perform structural engineering for high-voltage substation members, including rolled steel shapes, lattice framing, and tubular steel structures.
• Design foundations such as drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other foundation systems using industry-standard software.
• Develop and review physical substation layouts, plans, elevations, details, bills of materials, and construction specifications.
• Perform quality checks and project reviews in accordance with hirify.global quality management procedures.
• Collaborate with transmission line and multidisciplinary engineering teams, supporting standards development and multiple concurrent projects.
• Direct, mentor, train, or supervise EITs and CADD/design staff; support technical presentations and occasional travel.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
• At least five years of technical design experience with high-voltage switchyard and substation projects, including steel and foundation design.
• Previous structural engineering experience in an architecture/engineering or engineering consulting firm.
• Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the position’s location, such as a PE or P.Eng. license.
• Experience with AutoCAD, RISA, STAAD, SAP, Tedds, RAM, ETABS, SAFE, or similar tools.
• Knowledge of AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113, and related industry standards, along with strong communication, problem-solving, organizational, and collaboration skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with Risa 3D, RisaFoundation, L-Pile, MFAD, Mathcad Prime, AutoCAD, or MicroStation.
• Experience with outdoor physical design of electrical switchyards and substations of varying complexity.
