Modern Controls Engineer - Principal (Embedded C/C++)

Location: New Hudson, Michigan, United States; some travel and on-site customer work required.

Salary: $104,100–$173,900 per year.

What you will do

• Design, implement, tune, and validate classical and modern control algorithms for defense applications.
• Develop state-space and frequency-domain models for electromechanical, hydraulic, and vehicle systems using physical modeling and system identification.
• Deploy algorithms in Simulink and embedded C/C++ environments.
• Validate control strategies through SIL, HIL, bench, and vehicle testing, including model correlation with test data.
• Integrate controller hardware and electronic components, resolve electrical and system issues, and support commissioning, calibration, and field troubleshooting.
• Collaborate with mechanical design staff on system requirements and support vehicle-level deployment.

Requirements

• MS or PhD in Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, or Mechatronic Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• 8+ years of engineering experience.
• Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow, embedded C/C++, microcontrollers, Linux, or RTOS platforms.
• Knowledge of classical control, state-space modeling, LQR/LQG, Kalman filtering, MPC, robust control, MIMO systems, and numerical optimization.
• Experience with embedded model-based development tools, vehicle/system simulation, actuator controls, and electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic systems.
• Must meet the requirements for obtaining U.S. Government clearance.

Nice to have

• Experience with weapon systems, combat vehicle engineering, fire control systems, or turrets and ammunition handling systems.
• Knowledge of MIL-STD-498, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-882E, DO-178C, or DO-254.
• Experience delivering defense software CDRLs.
• Knowledge of Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, EtherCAT, DDS, TSN, CAN, LIN, J1939, XCP/CCP, and related tools.
• Experience with electric and hybrid vehicle architectures, data acquisition hardware, and vehicle/system troubleshooting.
