TL;DR
Controls Engineer (Embedded C) (Motion Control): Building and maintaining embedded firmware for motion control and motor drive products with an accent on clean architecture, real-time performance, and production-quality C code. Location: Torrance, California, United States. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents due to customer and regulatory requirements. The role may involve export-controlled information and hardware, requiring compliance with applicable export control laws and access requirements.

Salary: $120,000–$140,000 annual base salary plus equity.

What you will do

  • Design, implement, and maintain embedded firmware for motion control and motor drive products, primarily in C.
  • Contribute to firmware architecture focused on modularity, maintainability, testability, and real-time performance.
  • Translate control algorithms into production-quality embedded code in collaboration with experienced controls and firmware engineers.
  • Participate in code reviews, static analysis, unit testing, and integration testing.
  • Bring up, debug, and validate control firmware on hardware in the laboratory.
  • Document firmware architecture and interfaces, and help specify and execute verification test plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • 2–4 years of professional embedded firmware development experience related to motion control.
  • Strong C programming skills and understanding of modular firmware architecture, abstraction layers, and state machines.
  • Knowledge of microcontrollers, interrupts, timers, and communication protocols including SPI, I2C, UART, and CAN.
  • Experience with Git and collaborative software development workflows.
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency is required; export-control compliance is also required.

Nice to have

  • Exposure to motor control, field-oriented control, PWM generation, and current or position sensing.
  • Experience with motion control loops, PI/PID tuning, digital filters, and Bode or FRF analysis.
  • Familiarity with RTOS platforms such as FreeRTOS or ThreadX.
  • Experience with model-based design, code generation, or embedded C unit-testing frameworks.
  • Coursework or project experience in feedback control systems.
