Staff Software Engineer - IAM (Cybersecurity)

Location: Remote within the United States; candidates living within the specified radius of a GM hub in Austin, Texas; Mountain View, California; Warren, Michigan; or Washington, District of Columbia must report to the applicable location three times a week or at another frequency set by the manager.

Salary: $160,200–$246,300 per year, plus bonus potential.

What you will do

• Design, build, and maintain security-focused software components, services, APIs, and internal platforms across GM.
• Develop automation and developer-facing patterns for identity, authorization, secrets management, logging, and secure-by-default engineering.
• Integrate security controls into CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and cloud-native deployment workflows.
• Architect resilient and scalable authentication, authorization, policy evaluation, event ingestion, and security telemetry services.
• Perform secure code reviews, threat modeling, and design reviews, and contribute to incident response and post-incident reviews.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with application, infrastructure, platform, security, and audit teams.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, cybersecurity, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of experience building and owning production systems or in-house applications.
• Advanced proficiency in at least one of Python, Go, Java, or C++, with strong software engineering fundamentals.
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools, a major cloud platform, managed services, infrastructure-as-code, Docker, and Kubernetes.
• Strong knowledge of authentication and authorization patterns, encryption, secrets management, secure coding, and common vulnerability classes.
• Must be eligible to work in the United States without GM immigration sponsorship; GM does not provide sponsorship for this role.

Nice to have

• IAM experience involving external or partner identity, federation, multi-tenant identity, just-in-time provisioning, or B2B/B2C patterns.
• Experience with Databricks, Microsoft or Google cloud ecosystems, CASB technologies, React, or TypeScript.
• Experience leading initiatives that improved security posture, automation, or developer experience.
