Engineering Manager, Subscriber Experiences (Java/Node)

Location: DC-Washington-TWP Headquarters; on-site five days a week

Salary: $144,600–$241,100 annual, with potential bonus or incentive eligibility

What you will do

• Lead and develop an engineering team responsible for platforms supporting the end-to-end subscription business.
• Set technical direction for subscription operations, Finance and Accounting workflows, Customer Care, Enterprise subscriptions, strategic partnerships, and Print and Circulation operations.
• Partner with Finance and Accounting on revenue recognition, reconciliation, and downstream financial workflows.
• Modernize legacy systems and build reusable internal platforms, operational tools, integrations, and self-service business capabilities.
• Ensure applications and services are secure, observable, scalable, reliable, and production-ready through strong architecture, testing, deployment, and incident-response practices.
• Guide the adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and automation for development, investigation, remediation, testing, security, and recurring operations.

Requirements

• BA/BS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems.
• 2+ years of direct software engineering management experience, including coaching, career development, performance management, and technical leadership.
• Strong backend or full-stack engineering background with knowledge of architecture, APIs, databases, distributed systems, integrations, and event-driven systems.
• Experience with AWS or a comparable cloud environment, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code, observability, incident response, and reliability practices.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted engineering tools such as Kiro, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, or comparable technologies.

Nice to have

• 10+ years of software engineering experience and 4+ years managing engineers or multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience with Java, Node.js, React, AWS CDK, Jenkins, Airflow, DataDog, or CloudWatch.
• Experience with billing, accounting, financial, subscription, revenue, enterprise, B2B, partner, or institutional systems.
• Experience modernizing complex application portfolios and using AI or automation to improve engineering and operational workflows.
