Automation Technician

Location: On-site at the Brooklyn Navy Yard lab, United States; not remote-eligible.

Salary: $66,000–$103,000 per year (USD)

Operates a self-driving materials lab built around automated workcells combining PLCs, industrial robots, linear motion, and custom electromechanical equipment.

What you will do

• Diagnose and repair sensors, actuators, six-axis robots, control cabinets, and other automation hardware.
• Perform preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and maintain equipment reliability.
• Prototype, install, commission, and validate new automation equipment before production use.
• Collaborate with engineering and scientific teams on system modifications, experiments, and process development.
• Operate 3D printers, waterjets, laser cutters, and standard machine-shop equipment.
• Maintain clean and organized laboratory, workshop, and assembly areas.

Requirements

• Strong electromechanical troubleshooting skills using schematics, manuals, and diagnostic tools.
• Experience with PLC-based industrial automation systems.
• Fabrication and assembly skills for electro-mechanical systems.
• Working knowledge of industrial safety systems and safe work practices.
• Ability to work independently in a hands-on, development-oriented environment.
• Strong communication skills for collaboration across engineering and scientific teams.

Nice to have

• Experience supporting custom, prototype, or research-grade automation equipment.
• Exposure to materials processing, metallurgy, powder handling, or thermal systems.
• Familiarity with industrial networking, HMIs, or basic data collection systems.
