TL;DR
Senior Controls Engineer (PLC/HMI and Industrial Automation): Designing, programming, commissioning, and supporting sophisticated control systems for highly automated industrial machines with an accent on PLC/HMI software, electrical controls, robotics, and machine safety. Focus on integrating industrial networks, tuning servo and frequency drives, debugging machine interfaces, and delivering customer-specific automation solutions.

Location: Rochester, NY, US; in-person work required. Relocate to Rochester before starting if needed. Travel: 25% required.

Salary: $90,000–$160,000 per year.

What you will do

  • Design and program custom PLC/HMI control systems for highly automated machines.
  • Create electrical designs, hardware specifications, and machine safety circuits.
  • Simulate, test, debug, commission, and tune control systems at internal and end-user facilities.
  • Develop software and interfaces for motion-control equipment, machine tools, robots, and automated loaders.
  • Provide technical support by phone and on site, and define technical solutions for customers.
  • Collaborate with controls engineers, technicians, mechanical and electrical engineering teams, sales engineers, and customers.

Requirements

  • Minimum 6 years of industrial controls design and software experience.
  • Proficiency in PLC and HMI programming, including Allen-Bradley RSLogix, Siemens S7, FactoryTalk, or Siemens WinCC.
  • Experience designing and troubleshooting industrial electrical systems, PLCs, safety circuits, and machine interfaces.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication and I/O networks such as Profibus DP, Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Ethernet, DeviceNet, and RIO.
  • Experience with robotics, machine vision, servo and frequency drives, AC/DC motors, pneumatics, sensors, and motion control.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, Associate of Applied Science, or equivalent experience; valid driver’s license and passport required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with ABB, Fanuc, or IAI robots and Cognex or Keyence vision systems.
  • Experience with robotic welding, including arc, laser, or resistance welding.
  • Knowledge of ISO 12100, ISO 13849, NEC, NFPA 79, automation controls, and risk assessments.
  • Competency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
