Controls Engineer

Location: Richmond, VA, USA; onsite paper mill position

Annual base salary: Engineer I $70,080–$78,840; Engineer II $84,640–$95,220; Engineer III $102,080–$114,840; Senior Engineer $110,160–$123,930

What you will do

• Maintain, upgrade, and optimize paper mill control and automation systems.
• Lead automation and control projects, including modernization, installations, commissioning, and startup.
• Troubleshoot control systems using loop sheets, electrical diagrams, and control-loop performance analysis.
• Create project documentation, including scopes of work, layouts, cable schedules, drawings, bills of materials, and maintenance procedures.
• Collaborate with engineering, operations, maintenance personnel, and contractors to meet project scope, budget, and schedule requirements.
• Provide technical direction and training to the maintenance team and optimize systems with process engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in electrical, mechanical, or chemical engineering, or an associate degree in electrical engineering with relevant field experience.
• Experience programming PLCs using ladder logic, function diagrams, and structured text.
• Experience with AC and DC drives, control-system networks and communications protocols, HMI configuration, DCS, continuous process controls, field instrumentation, and valves.
• Experience with control-system preventive maintenance and software backups.
• AutoCAD skills for power plans, single-line diagrams, control-panel layouts, loop sheets, and electrical control diagrams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across organizational levels.

Nice to have

• Experience with Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Yaskawa, ABB, Foxboro, Schneider DCS, Voith QCS, and Rockwell ControlLogix or CompactLogix PLCs.
