Archaeological Field Director

Location: San Francisco, California, United States; fieldwork and travel are required, including multi-week projects and occasional short-notice travel.

Salary: USD $23.00–$34.00 per hour, with compensation varying by experience, education, skills, and location. Eligibility for an annual discretionary bonus may apply.

What you will do

• Ensure the quality of archaeological data, fieldwork, and project paperwork.
• Direct and manage field crews conducting archaeological surveys, testing, data recovery, and monitoring.
• Apply safety and quality standards and ensure field employees follow required policies and procedures.
• Complete field and documentation tasks on schedule and coordinate project requirements with project managers.
• Support additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a related discipline.
• At least 3 years of experience in archaeological surveys and/or excavations, including 1 year at field supervisory level.
• Experience with digital field technologies such as GPS, Trimble, and Geode.
• Critical thinking, strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to work independently in the field.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Ability to travel, work in the field on multi-week projects, and complete a background check and drug screen.

Nice to have

• Archaeological report-writing experience.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office.
