Senior FPGA Programmer (Automation)

Location: Chelmsford, Massachusetts, United States. Work arrangements may include a mix of in-office and remote work depending on the role and business needs.

Base salary range: $118,265.18–$160,005.83 USD per year, plus an annual discretionary bonus.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture and development of FPGA-based systems for real-time control, machine vision, motion control, and distributed automation platforms.
• Design HDL-based architectures in VHDL and/or Verilog/SystemVerilog, including deterministic low-latency pipelines, multi-clock systems, and high-bandwidth data movement.
• Implement synchronized multi-axis control, PWM generation, encoder interfaces, feedback processing, and hardware-accelerated control algorithms.
• Build high-speed sensor and camera-processing pipelines using interfaces such as MIPI, Camera Link, CoaXPress, and Gigabit Ethernet Vision.
• Develop FPGA communication and synchronization architectures using EtherCAT, PCIe, SPI, UART, CAN, Gigabit Ethernet, and multi-gigabit SerDes.
• Collaborate across electrical, controls, mechanical, software, and systems engineering on board bring-up, validation, performance optimization, and production readiness.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, robotics, controls engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 8+ years of FPGA development experience with expert proficiency in VHDL, Verilog/SystemVerilog, and FPGA design methodologies.
• Experience with AMD/Xilinx, Intel/Altera, or Lattice FPGA families.
• Demonstrated experience developing real-time FPGA control systems, high-speed sensor interfaces, hardware accelerators, and synchronized multi-channel processing architectures.
• Strong understanding of digital signal processing, control systems, motion control, hardware/software partitioning, and timing closure.
• Experience with simulation, verification, testbench development, hardware debugging, and laboratory instrumentation.

Nice to have

• Experience with precision motion control, semiconductor equipment, robotics, advanced automation, or machine vision.
• Knowledge of EtherCAT, distributed controls, sensor fusion, computer vision acceleration, or FPGA-based image processing.
• Experience with Kalman filtering, state estimation, motor control, electromagnetic actuator control, or real-time control loops.
• Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, embedded Linux, Zynq SoCs, PCIe, DDR4/DDR5, and multi-gigabit serial transceivers.
