Sr. Staff Software Engineer (Java/Spring/AWS)

Location: San Francisco, United States; hybrid work model. Positions in Scottsdale, San Francisco, Chicago, or New York follow a hybrid schedule. Candidates must already be eligible to work in the United States, and visa sponsorship is not available.

Salary: $180,000–$240,000 per year in San Francisco. Phoenix and Chicago pay range: $150,000–$200,000 per year. Additional discretionary incentive plan and benefits may apply.

What you will do

• Define technical strategy, architecture, design, prototypes, and implementation for broad and complex requirements.
• Design and develop scalable distributed systems, SaaS, cloud solutions, and microservices.
• Establish department-wide coding, design, and engineering standards and review output from multiple teams.
• Partner with engineering, product, architecture, design, support, and operations teams to build features and resolve production issues.
• Lead technical planning and cross-functional delivery efforts while resolving conflicts across teams.
• Develop engineers through mentoring and improve engineering standards, tooling, testing, and processes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related technical field, or equivalent experience, with 12 or more years of relevant experience.
• At least 9 years of experience developing distributed systems, SaaS, cloud solutions, or microservices.
• At least 8 years of Java and Spring experience, including proficiency with Maven or Gradle.
• Experience delivering business-critical systems, designing scalable systems, and working with event-driven architecture and messaging frameworks such as Pub/Sub, Kafka, or RabbitMQ.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure, plus CI/CD, testing, secure coding, SDLC, and DevOps practices.
• Must independently possess U.S. work eligibility at the date of hire; employment visa sponsorship is unavailable. Background and drug screening are required.

Nice to have

• Advanced Java and Spring Boot development and AWS-based application architecture.
• Hands-on system design and coding, code and design reviews, and technical leadership for delivery teams.
• Experience with real-time payment networks such as RTP or FedNow, fintech, and Kubernetes.
• Leading technical planning, decomposition, and execution while coordinating engineering activities without formal people-management responsibility.
