Senior Staff Software Engineer, Recognition Platform (AI)

Location: Seattle, Washington, United States; on-site at least four days per week

Base salary: $231,000–$267,500 USD annually

What you will do

• Own the architecture of the Recognition Platform across edge ingestion, identity resolution, decisioning, notifications, and operator interfaces.
• Set technical direction through RFCs, roadmap sequencing, design reviews, and cross-functional alignment across application, computer vision, data, security, platform, and external partner teams.
• Evolve horizontally scalable edge-to-cloud streaming pipelines for high throughput, low tail latency, intermittent connectivity, backpressure, and out-of-order events.
• Design real-time rules and decisioning systems for watchlist alerts, routing, eligibility, consent gating, frequency capping, and next-best actions.
• Architect privacy, identity, and consent models for biometric-regulated environments, including bounded-time opt-out propagation.
• Define production quality practices including SLOs, alerting, runbooks, soak testing, feature-flagged rollouts, automated testing, and mentorship.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience building and operating distributed, data-intensive production systems, including ownership of multi-service platforms.
• Expertise in a JVM language such as Scala or Java, with event-driven and service-oriented design using gRPC, protobuf, streaming, and relational data modeling.
• Hands-on experience with high-throughput ingestion, delivery semantics, idempotency, ordering, backpressure, and tail latency.
• Experience building rules, eligibility, or decisioning systems combining deterministic logic with probabilistic or model-driven signals.
• Strong technical leadership, RFC writing, cross-functional alignment, third-party integrations, observability, automated testing, and progressive delivery.
• Comfort working with physical-world deployments, hardware constraints, operational complexity, and AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude Code and GitHub Copilot.

Nice to have

• Experience with computer vision, biometric matching, sensor fusion, confidence thresholds, or model drift.
• Background in privacy- or biometric-regulated domains, including BIPA, CCPA, GDPR, or consent-management systems.
• Experience with IoT, edge computing, fleet-scale telemetry, MQTT-class transports, identity resolution, or customer data platforms.
• Experience with hospitality, retail, physical-operations software, CRM, or PMS integrations.
• Prior scope comparable to a tech lead of leads, principal engineer, or senior technical owner.
