Principal Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid in Boston, Massachusetts, with attendance at the Boston office 3 days per week. Candidates must currently be authorized to work in the U.S. and must not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Annual base salary: $114,200–$267,800, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.

What you will do

• Set technical direction across multiple domains, defining architecture, system patterns, and high-stakes trade-offs.
• Lead complex, multi-team initiatives from architecture through delivery and operational excellence.
• Design, prototype, and ship production systems using modern AI development tools.
• Define practices, guardrails, and review standards for safe, high-quality AI-enabled development in a regulated environment.
• Own reliability, scalability, security, and performance for mission-critical systems.
• Mentor engineers, build consensus across teams, and advise engineering, product, and executive stakeholders.

Requirements

• Typically 10+ years of software development experience, or equivalent high-level experience delivering complex systems.
• Track record of delivering large distributed systems to production at scale and influencing technical direction across teams.
• Strong understanding of distributed architecture principles, including scalability, loose coupling, separation of concerns, and designing for failure; AWS experience is preferred.
• Experience designing AI- and agent-based systems, including orchestration, configurability, guardrails, and rigorous verification of AI-generated work.
• Experience with relational and document-oriented databases, performance tuning, and scaling.
• Proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, React, automated testing, CI/CD, and modern code-management practices.

Nice to have

• Experience designing AI products in a high-trust, regulated insurance environment.
• Less than 10 years of experience is considered for high-performing candidates.
