Principal Software Engineer (Nuclear Energy)

Location: Torrance, California, United States, with regular travel to the Orangeville, Utah pilot plant

Salary: $195,000–$270,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Own the end-to-end architecture of software platforms covering telemetry, streaming, simulation, and enterprise systems.
• Design and build high-volume telemetry ingestion for reactor test stands, fuel manufacturing, and instrumentation while preserving timestamps, units, quality, and ordering.
• Architect streaming infrastructure for analytics, simulation, monitoring, and enterprise consumers, including throughput, backpressure, replay, and recovery.
• Support simulation and modeling platforms through campaign management, compute scheduling, and reproducible, traceable results.
• Build full-stack services and web interfaces and integrate PLM, ERP, MES, and records systems through REST, GraphQL, and event-driven interfaces.
• Set standards for deployment, observability, testing, on-call operations, software quality, technical direction, design reviews, and mentoring.

Requirements

• 10+ years of relevant software development and production deployment experience, including technical ownership of a platform or major system.
• Experience designing and operating high-volume telemetry or time-series systems and streaming or event-driven architectures such as Kafka, Pulsar, Kinesis, or Flink.
• Experience with simulation, modeling, scientific computing, batch or distributed compute, and reproducible results management.
• Strong experience with full-stack services, web interfaces, enterprise integrations, cloud and containerized deployment, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD.
• Proficiency in both typed languages such as Java, C#, Go, C++, or Rust and untyped languages such as Python or JavaScript.
• Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States as a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

Nice to have

• Experience in hardware, manufacturing, aerospace, energy, or heavy-industrial environments.
• Familiarity with industrial protocols and data sources including OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus, and historians.
• Experience with HPC scheduling, GPU compute, large-scale orchestration, or deployment across cloud and on-premises infrastructure.
• Knowledge of regulated environments and standards such as NQA-1, GAMP 5, or 21 CFR Part 11.
• Experience building LLM- and agent-based systems, including retrieval, agentic workflows, evaluation harnesses, or tool integrations.
