Staff Engineer (Payments)

What you will do

• Oversee the development lifecycle for assigned programs and systems across a team of software engineers.
• Provide technical leadership for the payments platform, including architecture decisions, system design, and technology roadmaps.
• Lead and build complex projects that enhance existing payment systems and deliver new scalable, secure, and highly available capabilities.
• Collaborate with product management, architecture, security, and compliance teams to define requirements and implement solutions.
• Participate in coding, code reviews, debugging, performance monitoring, and hands-on technical delivery.
• Mentor engineers, promote engineering standards, evaluate emerging technologies, and ensure compliance with payment regulations.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience.
• At least 6 years of experience developing technical solutions, including 5+ years in software development.
• Proven experience designing and building highly scalable payment systems or financial transaction platforms.
• Strong proficiency in Java and experience with microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, Spring Boot, and APIs.
• Experience leading engineering teams, directing coding efforts, and independently solving complex system and program issues.
• Strong problem-solving, debugging, analytical, communication, and application-security skills.

Nice to have

• Banking or fintech experience, including payment gateways, ACH, Zelle, checks, BillPay, RTP, FedNow, loan payments, card processing, and PCI DSS.
• Experience with fraud prevention, risk management, financial regulations, third-party payment providers, and financial institutions.
• Agile experience with Scrum or Kanban, plus DevOps, CI/CD, and automated testing.
• Knowledge of OpenShift, Kafka, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
