Lead AI Engineer (Biomedical & Vigilance Innovation)

Location: Durham, North Carolina, United States; hybrid schedule with four days in office and one day per week from home. In-office requirements may change based on business needs.

What you will do

• Design, build, validate, and maintain machine learning, NLP, generative AI, and agentic automation solutions for biomedical and pharmacovigilance use cases.
• Develop tools for adverse-event intake, case triage, coding assistance, duplicate detection, signal prioritization, trend analysis, and medical review.
• Build scalable pipelines that integrate structured and unstructured data from safety databases, clinical systems, literature, real-world evidence, and external repositories.
• Lead the architecture and delivery of AI platforms supporting Global Patient Safety, Organovigilance, precision medicine, and next-generation surveillance for advanced therapeutics.
• Apply ontology mapping, terminology harmonization, metadata strategies, data lineage, and audit controls across biomedical data assets.
• Establish model governance covering performance monitoring, unbiased detection, explainability, validation, testing, change control, and lifecycle documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of relevant experience, master’s degree with 6+ years, or PhD with 2+ years.
• 5+ years of experience in AI engineering, machine learning, or advanced analytics within biopharma, healthcare, or another regulated industry.
• 5+ years of hands-on experience with AI tools such as Python, R, MATLAB, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or cloud-based machine learning platforms.
• Experience delivering AI products and production implementations, including AI-native applications, LLMs, autonomous systems, computer vision, or ML-driven process optimization.
• Strong knowledge of cloud-native engineering, data architecture, platform architecture, modern software development, and scalable production systems.
• Ability to communicate technical results to non-technical stakeholders and senior leadership while working across complex matrixed environments.

Nice to have

• Experience with NLP, LLMs, knowledge graphs, biomedical text mining, or pharmacovigilance systems such as Argus, ArisG, or Veeva.
• Knowledge of pharmacovigilance, clinical development, biomedical data, healthcare regulations, GVP, FDA, EMA, ICH, or data privacy frameworks.
• Experience with pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic modeling, simulation, and applications of AI in pharmacovigilance.
• Exposure to rare diseases, drugs, biologics, devices, cell therapy, gene therapy, xenotransplantation, or organ-based therapeutics.
• Experience with external innovation strategies, academic partnerships, or emerging technology investments.
