Location: Blacksburg, Virginia, United States; frequent travel by air or automobile, approximately 70% of the workweek

Pay scale: $20.60–$31.69 per hour

What you will do

• Perform moderate- and high-complexity laboratory testing across chemistry, hematology, and immunology.
• Collect patient specimens, assist with phlebotomy, and support special procedures such as bone marrow procedures.
• Operate laboratory equipment and complete scheduled maintenance, calibration, quality control, and corrective actions.
• Prepare blood smears, perform white blood cell differentials, examine urinary sediment, and process reference-laboratory specimens.
• Document patient results, critical-result follow-up, quality records, inventory, and regulatory procedures.
• Train employees, serve as an instrument operator and laboratory science resource, and oversee daily activities when the supervisor is absent.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, biological science, chemistry, or a related healthcare field meeting the stated coursework requirements.
• Except for grandfathered situations, a bachelor’s degree in medical technology is required.
• Current state license where required; licensure and certification requirements depend on the state.
• Ability to perform CLIA-classified moderate- and high-complexity testing with minimal supervision.
• Ability to meet physical requirements, including prolonged sitting or standing, operation of complex equipment, and occasional lifting of up to 40 pounds.
• Ability to travel frequently by air or automobile, approximately 70% of the workweek.

Nice to have

• AMT, ASCP, or equivalent certification.
• Laboratory experience.
• Four-year degree candidates completing hematology and/or chemistry examinations after one year of training.
