Transportation Customs Manager (Logistics)

What you will do

• Manage end-to-end UK import customs clearance for cross-border shipments, including port clearance, declarations, documents, duties, taxes, inspections, and exceptions.
• Coordinate customs brokers, freight forwarders, carriers, and other service providers, setting service levels and escalation processes.
• Act as the customs point of contact for retail and internal logistics, warehousing, procurement, finance, legal, tax, and customer service teams.
• Ensure compliance with UK customs regulations, trade requirements, classification rules, declaration standards, and import eligibility requirements.
• Build customs KPIs and reports, analyze bottlenecks and costs, and drive process standardization and continuous improvement.
• Build and manage a small customs team of 1–2 people, including work allocation, coaching, and capability development.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or above in International Trade, Logistics, Supply Chain, Customs, Business, or a related field.
• At least 5 years of experience in customs, customs clearance, international logistics, or cross-border supply chain operations.
• Strong understanding of UK import customs clearance and port clearance operations.
• Knowledge of tariff classification, declaration logic, duties and taxes, trade documentation, and customs control requirements.
• Experience managing service providers and coordinating multiple internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to handle complex customs issues independently and drive resolution.

Nice to have

• Experience in UK retail imports, cross-border e-commerce, or high-volume import operations.
• Familiarity with VAT, EORI, IOR, product compliance, and import eligibility requirements.
• Experience handling customs inspections, holds, disputes, and duty or tax issues.
• Experience with customs system implementation, process digitization, or operational transformation.
• Prior team management experience or the potential to lead a small team.
