Robotics Planning Engineer (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: San Francisco, California, USA; onsite five days a week. Periodic travel to customer sites of up to 5% may be required, with some schedule flexibility during deployments.

Base salary: $119,000–$161,000 per year, with potential eligibility for equity awards.

What you will do

• Develop high-level autonomy systems that coordinate fleets of autonomous haul trucks at the site level.
• Design motion planning algorithms, from path planning through trajectory optimization, for large non-holonomic vehicles.
• Build multi-agent coordination and fleet planning systems that prevent collisions and deadlocks while improving throughput.
• Create simulation, visualization, configuration-driven testing, replay, and logged-data debugging tools.
• Optimize planning algorithms for real-time production performance and collaborate with controls engineers to ensure paths are executable.

Requirements

• BS, MS, or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of professional software development experience, excluding internships.
• Strong foundation in motion planning algorithms, vehicle kinematics, and nonholonomic constraints.
• Experience with computational geometry, including collision detection and polygon operations.
• Proficiency in Python and NumPy for numerical computing.
• Ability to analyze algorithmic complexity and optimize systems for real-time performance.

Nice to have

• Experience with multi-agent coordination, scheduling, fleet management, or dispatch systems.
• Familiarity with Dubins and Reeds-Shepp curves, trajectory optimization, DCBF, or MPC-based planners.
• Knowledge of graph algorithms, GEOS, Shapely, Redis, ZeroMQ, or modern ML techniques for planning.
