Lead AI Engineer

Location: New York, NY; hybrid schedule with three days per week in the office and remaining days remote. Candidates must reside within, or be willing to relocate to, a commutable distance from one of the talent markets.

Salary: $170,800–$234,800 per year, plus eligibility for a bonus incentive plan.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of full-stack AI applications, including LLM pipelines, retrieval systems, agentic workflows, human-in-the-loop processes, and platform services.
• Build critical, high-risk components for scalable AI systems that prioritize reliability, accuracy, auditability, performance, and cost efficiency.
• Define engineering standards for structured outputs, evaluation, observability, testing, fallback strategies, latency optimization, and cost controls.
• Lead technical design reviews, evaluate technologies and AI models, and translate ambiguous business goals into technical strategies and executable workstreams.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pair programming, and technical guidance across multiple projects.
• Own deployment strategies, monitoring, incident management, production reliability, and compliance with privacy, security, governance, and audit requirements.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including designing and operating production systems at scale.
• Proven experience delivering AI products or platforms to production and operating LLMs in business-critical workflows.
• Experience with structured outputs, tool calling, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, orchestration frameworks, and evaluation pipelines.
• Strong programming skills in Python and/or TypeScript/JavaScript, plus experience with distributed systems, APIs, data platforms, and cloud-native applications.
• Ability to work in a hybrid schedule with three office days per week in a commutable talent market.

Nice to have

• Experience with evaluation frameworks, benchmark datasets, regression testing, model quality measurement, and human review processes.
• Experience with Model Context Protocol, workflow orchestration, multi-step reasoning frameworks, and AI observability platforms.
• Experience with React, Next.js, Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD, Google Cloud Platform, Azure, AWS, or Vertex AI.
• Experience in healthcare, financial services, government, or other highly regulated industries.
