Head of AI & Program Technology Engineering (AI)

Location: New York, NY HQ, USA; hybrid or remote work is available. Some travel may be required for partner meetings, field engagement, and sector conferences.

US pay rate: $185,000–$200,000 annually. UK pay rate: £87,000–£100,000 annually.

What you will do

• Set the technical strategy and roadmap for IRC’s program-facing AI portfolio, including build-versus-buy-versus-partner decisions.
• Lead engineers, applied AI engineers, ML specialists, and QA staff building agentic systems, predictive analytics, AI diagnostics, and other program-specific solutions.
• Co-design safe, human-centered AI solutions with program leaders across health, education, protection, resettlement, and emergency response.
• Lead technical partnerships with Anthropic, OpenAI, and other frontier AI organizations.
• Design and oversee highly available Microsoft Azure architectures with appropriate security, redundancy, backup, and recovery strategies.
• Oversee CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, QA, monitoring, scaling, documentation, and cloud and model-inference cost optimization.

Requirements

• Production experience building and shipping AI systems such as agentic frameworks, LLM applications, RAG systems, computer vision solutions, or applied ML pipelines.
• Strong full-stack foundation with Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern frameworks.
• Experience with cloud architecture, preferably Azure, including AI services, DevOps pipelines, and cost-effective scaling.
• Knowledge of data security and privacy practices for sensitive or personally identifiable information.
• 7–10+ years of software engineering or technical product development experience, including 3+ years leading engineers as a manager or tech lead.
• Ability to collaborate with non-technical leaders and operate across global teams, time zones, and varied field contexts.

Nice to have

• Experience deploying AI in low-resource, low-bandwidth, or offline contexts.
• Experience with humanitarian, development, or global health organizations.
• French or Arabic language skills.
